GETTING STARTED
Sample field and tutorials
The read-only Sample field that every account shares, the 11-step guided tutorial over it, and the getting-started checklist.
Overview
The Sample field is one read-only project, the same for every account. It describes one oil field once (one fluid, one tank, one set of wells and one set of fiscal terms), and every module's sample data comes from that one description. Use it to see how the modules connect before you build your own project.
A new project of your own starts empty. Sample values never enter it.
Open the sample field
You can open it from several places:
- Overview: Open the sample field, or Explore the sample field when you have no other projects.
- The project switcher in the top bar: Open the sample field.
- Empty module pages offer the sample instead of loading demo data into your project.
- In local mode (no sign-in), a first-time visitor lands on the sample field once per browser.
Before the sample opens, Converge saves your open project to Version history, so nothing is lost. The sample is never saved to the cloud and never counts against your plan's project limit.
What is in it
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Fluid | Black oil, 35 °API, gas specific gravity 0.75, solution GOR 650 scf/STB, reservoir temperature 200 °F, bubble point 2,748 psia |
| Tank | "Main reservoir": 80 MMSTB oil in place, initial pressure 3,600 psia, 3,209 psia at the end of 2025, one aquifer model |
| Wells | W1 to W4 on stream from January 2023; W5 and W6 are infill wells started in year 2 |
| Simulation | The same tank on a 10 × 10 × 3 grid; 79.2 MMSTB oil in place, within 1 % of the tank figure |
| Economics | $70/bbl rising 2 % a year, 12.5 % royalty, 35 % income tax |
| NPV at 10 % | $83.55MM, the same in Economics and in the Integrated forecast |
All pressures are absolute. In Metric the figures show in bara, °C, Sm³ and so on.
Read-only behaviour
The banner Sample field, read-only. sits over every page while the sample is open.
- You can change tabs, selections and views, and run calculations.
- Data edits are blocked. A typed number snaps back, and the app shows "This is the sample field. Make a copy to edit."
- You cannot submit the sample for review or comment on it.
Modules your plan does not license still show the plan screen on the sample. The compositional PVT component limit of the Free and Student plans does not apply to the sample. See Licences and seats.
Make a copy
Select Make a copy in the banner or on the Overview. Converge creates a new, editable project named Sample field (my copy) with the same data, and saves a version of the untouched copy right away so you can always go back to it.
The copy is an ordinary project: it counts against your plan's project limit. On a plan with a 1-project limit that you have already used, Converge tells you instead of creating a copy that cannot save.
To start from scratch instead, select Start my own project in the banner, or New project.
Guided tutorial
The guided tutorial is an 11-step panel that walks the sample field in the order the data flows: fluid, tank, wells, forecast, money. Start it with Guided tutorial on the Overview or in the sample banner. If your project is not the sample, the tutorial opens the sample first.
| Step | Page | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Overview | One field described once, read by every module |
| 2 | PVT | The 35 °API fluid and its bubble point |
| 3 | Material balance | Three years of history and the accepted match |
| 4 | Well performance | Well W1's inflow and the nodal operating point |
| 5 | Well test | A 120-hour build-up on W1; regression should recover about 60 md and skin about +3 |
| 6 | Decline & RTA | W1 monthly oil rates and a decline fit |
| 7 | Surface network | W1 to W4 through two manifolds to one separator |
| 8 | Simulation | The tank on a 10 × 10 × 3 grid |
| 9 | Integrated forecast | Tank, network and economics coupled over 15 years |
| 10 | Economics | The price deck, fiscal terms and NPV at 10 % |
| 11 | Overview | Make a copy or start your own project |
Each step has a Try: line with one thing to do on that page. Use Next and Back to move; the panel switches page for you. Finish closes it. The numbers in the steps follow your Field or Metric choice.
Getting-started checklist
An empty project shows a Getting started checklist on the Overview with a progress bar:
- Set up the fluid
- Add a well
- Paste production history for decline analysis
- Paste tank history for material balance
- Load a well test
- Build the surface network
- Run the economics
Each item opens its module. Start with the fluid: every other module reads the project fluid.
Typical values
When a module needs a number you have not entered yet, it starts from a typical value and marks the field with a typical-value badge until you edit it. Check every badged value before you rely on a result.
